British prosecutors announced on Tuesday that they would not make allegations against the person arrested in the death of former 2023 NHL player Adam Johnson.
29 -year -old Johnson died by a skate blade only after his neck. Police arrested a person two weeks later in South Yorkshire, England.
Johnson, a forward who appeared in 13 matches with Pittsburgh Penguin from 2018-20, was playing for Nottingham Panthers of Elite Hockey League when an event occurred on October 28, 2023.
The police did not identify the man who was arrested, but was involved in a collision with Sheffield Steelers Defenseman Matt Petgrev Johnson. The 32-year-old Petgrev later recognized himself in a crowded appeal to help in legal fees.
The Crown Prosecution Service on Tuesday confirmed that it had decided not to bring criminal charges.
Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Michael Quinn said, “CPS and South Yorkshire Police have worked together to determine whether any criminal allegations should be made against other ice hockey players.”
“After a comprehensive review of all the evidence by the police investigation and all the evidence by the police investigation and all the evidence, we have concluded that there is no realistic possibility of punishment for any criminal offense and therefore there will be no prosecution. Our views remain with Adam Johnson’s family and friends.”
Johnson received emergency treatment on ice and was rushed to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, where he was declared dead.
Johnson, a native of Minnesota, recorded a goal and three assistance during his time with Penguin.
After the tragedy, the English Ice Hockey Association needs to wear neck guards since the beginning of 2024.
