Dominican Republic in Gold Cup opener to Mexico edges

Edson Alvarez scored one goal and one aid and on Saturday night in California to help Mexico win 3–2 over Dominican Republic in ConcacAF Gold Cup Group A Play.

Defending champions Mexico (1-0, 3 digits) also scored goals from Raul Jimanez and Caesar Montes.

Peter Gonzalez and Edison Azkona scored goals for the Dominican Republic (0–1-0, 0 points), which was eligible for the Gold Cup for the first time.

Mexico was killed in the 44th minute when Orbelin Pineeda sent a cross to Alvarez, which sent a header to the net.

Mexico made it 2–0 in the second minute of the second half when Jimnez scored on the right leg shot.

The Republic of Dominican climbed the board in the 51st minute when Gonzalaz sent a left leg to the net.

Two minutes later, Mexico competed on a corner kick taken by Alexis Vega. Alvarez led the ball, and it closed Montess’s head and moved into the net.

The Republic of Dominican receded again when Azkona’s right -foot shot cut a defender in a loss.
