CSK loses Sam Curan after Craig overton, RR’s Jofra Archer will not return to IPL 2025

Overall, four foreign players have taken out the IPL 2025 before its resumption on 17 May.

After Craig Overton, two more overseas players have refused to come back for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Chennai Super Kings‘ (RR) Sam Curran and Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) Jofra Archer won’t return to India. Just like Overton, Curran and Archer are both Englishmen.

Part of two knocked-out teams, it makes some sense that Curran and Archer aren’t returning. And the latter can even make the case that he’s due to play international cricket in early June and Archer has had injury issues for 4 years now. But Curran isn’t even selected by England to face the West Indies.

But CSK won’t be too dissatisfied. That’s because, earlier today, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the IPL teams will be allowed to bring in temporary players for the remaining matches. This means that CSK can replace Curran and Overton. Delhi Capitals have already used this to replace Jake Fraser-McGurk with Mustafizur Rahman.

For RR, they have already gotten a fast bowler in Nandre Burger. And the 2008 champions have revealed that Archer is currently injured and that’s the only reason he isn’t coming back. Had the pacer returned, it would have been only for a couple of days as RR’s season comes to an end on May 20. Archer is also likely to play some red-ball cricket for England Lions before the 5-match India Test series, and that factors in as well.

“It is not a case of not being willing because we are out of reckoning for playoffs. He is nurturing an injury, and we are prioritizing his fitness,” an RR official told Cricbuzz.
