Rohit Sharma’s test retirement has not only made zero of an experienced batsman, but has also left India in search of a new captain in the format. In 2022, while handling duties from Virat Kohli, Rohit led the team for three years before he called time on his test career. To make things poor for India, Kohli, another experienced player and certainly one of the great sports, also left the format. Shubman Gill has emerged as a front-raner to lead India in tests, which also discusses the names of Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant.
Former India all -rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has named a unique choice that he feels that the team’s Test should be considered for the captain. Ashwin named Jadeja for the role, supported him with the fact that he is the most experienced man in the team after Rohit and Virat’s departure.
“We shouldn’t say that, Ravindra Jadeja is the most experienced person in that team. If you are ready to train a new man, Jadeja can captain with a vice-captainment for two years for two years. It seems that I am throwing in a wildcard,” Ashwin said on YouTube channel ‘Aish’s butt’.
He said, “We wish Captain India after playing for all the teams. Jadeja should also have that dream. He has also captained Chennai Super Kings, although it was not right. I am not saying that he should become a captain, but of course it should be considered,” he said.
With leaving the test format of both Rohit and Virat, the attention has completely moved to the head coach Gautam Gambhir, which will have to create a new-look squad. Ashwin said that Gambhir will play a big role in India’s captaincy pick.
“Whatever team is selected will be the team of Gautam Gambhir. Apart from Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, the most experienced player is only serious. He will have to say a lot in the appointment of the captain as he has to prepare the side,” Ashwin explained.
India starts its campaign in the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle with a five-match series against England, starting from June 20. This will be a huge test for the serious-covered side as it will visit England without two experienced players Kohli and Rohit.
