Bols: ‘Absolutely this Miss’ Team Penscay was not caught soon

Dog Bols, CEO of Indycar and Penske Entertainment, Mark Miles (left) and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, made a declaration beyond the Fast Fried practice for 109th run for the 109th run of Indianapolis 500 in Indianaapolis Motor Speedway on Friday, May 16, 2025.

Indycar President Daug Bols said on Wednesday that “this is absolutely a miss” that Team Penscay ran with the revised Atenuators at least a year ago, a member of an Indycar Tech team caught the Sunday on Sunday before qualifying for Indianapolis 500.

An Atenuator is placed completely behind each Indie car for safety reasons, when a car crashes a car at the back, to absorb the energy. For this reason, it is not allowed to tamper with per inges, atanuators.

While the evidence of visual and anecdotes is that the team Penscay Drivers are running with smooth rear attections for at least one year – including Joseph Newguarden operated by Newguarden when he won the Indie 500 winner last year’s 500 winners – he was not caught until Sunday.

According to Bols, how fast a car runs, rear attenuators have zero effects on it. And over a limited time to inspect each car, the technical teams of Indycar focused on parts of the car that could give unfair advantage to the driver during a race.

“On Sunday, when 12 cars which were in fast 12, they were presented in the tech line, we had a 30 -minute window to get 12 cars through Tech.”

“On the parts that are specially designed for protection, our team and technology, regularly, look at those parts, and it is one of the parts that was not seen on Sunday. It’s a missing?

On Sunday, Team Penscay was caught, as according to Bols, Indycar’s technical director Kevin “Rocket” Blanched during the inspection noticed that the Atenuator was stunned smoothly on the number 12 car of the team Penske driver Will Power. He then checked the Atenuator on Newgarden’s number 2 car and discovered the same illegality.

For illegal amendments, his punishment is being sent behind the official early grid for Sunday 500. Newguarden and Power will be in the 11th and final row when 33 drivers hit the track.

Earlier on Wednesday, Roger Penscay – Joe owns the team Penscay, Indycar, Indy 500 and Indianapolis Motor Speedway – Tim Cyndric, Director of Team Penscay, Indycar Managing Director Ron Rukevsky and Indycar General Manager Kel Moore “for organizational failures”.

According to an Associated Press report, some contestants accused Team Penscay of cheating on their adjusted Atenuators. He believed that the smooth part allowed the drivers of Penscay to take an edge while qualifying.

“This is not an inquiry as far as I am related, but … we are going to continue to understand how the process failed and how we can improve it,” Bols said. “And most importantly, we have to ensure that, A, our drivers remain safe, but B, that the level of the playground cannot be called in question, and when a team or driver is on the track and they beat someone or they beat someone or they beat someone, neither can one of those teams say that they did so because they did a benefit because they had missed something.”
