BCCI is unlikely to take Shreyas Iyer for India’s testing squad for England

Shreyas Iyer took an average of 68.57 against Odisha in the last season of the Ranji Trophy with double hundred.

The Board of Control (BCCI) for cricket in India is also not keen to take Shreyas Iyer to England. With a 5-match tour at just one month away, BCCI is expected to announce India’s test squad soon. Some spots are for tombs. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement has opened the position of opener and number four. But except Sai Reformson, there are candidates within the team who will accept these roles.

One place that seems very open is number five. Shreyas Iyer, Karun Nair, Sai Sudarshan, Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal and Sarfaraz Khan are all in conversation. Well, one of them cannot be anymore. BCCI is not sold on Shreyas, test batsman.

Ranji Trophy and Foreign Selection

The Mumbai batsman had a statistically a great Ranji Trophy season. But when someone keeps a close watch, you see that Shreyas scored 2 hundreds of (142 and 233) against a little weak teams like Maharashtra and Odisha. If we remove these two scores, Shreyas scored just 105 runs in 5 innings.

Although when he talked about his skills against the short ball, he improved a lot, but BCCI is not sure about his game. “If India plays a home series, the possibility of selection of Shreyas would be cured. But on a foreign tour, against Quick, their possibility does not really look great,” A BCCI official told the Telegraph.

No confidence by selectors for England

It seems that Shreyas will not be able to work as his attacker game style in England, a place where most batsmen have to leave the ball more. And he has not yet shown anyone whether he will be able to handle the swing.

“See, the general feeling is that he still needs to do a little work on his red ball game. Yes, he is doing a great job in limited overs, adapted to situations excellently. But Test cricket is a separate ballgame. Short-goose on one side will have a lot of swing and movement in England, which is very important to leave the ball.” The source added.

“As far as Shreyas is concerned, he is a naturally aggressive player and seems to score runs quickly. Therefore, curb his tendency can not be so easy, and it is an aspect that can go against the squad before finalizing him,” Another BCCI officer said.
