IPL President Arun Dhumal said that BCCI seriously considering the 94-match home-and distant format from the next media rights cycle to expand the league in the distant format, which falls in 2028. “Ideally, we want a large window, or perhaps at some points from 74 to 84 or 94 … so that every team meets to play against every team’s house and distance, for this, you need 94 games,” Dhumal was said by Espncricinfo on Monday.
The IPL was talked about growing up to 84 matches for the ongoing season, but due to tight scheduling it was delayed. “Given the window and the kind of commitments we see in relation to bilateral cricket and ICC events, it may not be possible in the short term. “There is a lot of cricket: we came back from Australia from a test series, we had this Champions Trophy, and we have this IPL on top. That is why it was decided that it is not understood by going from 74 to 84 (in 2025), but whenever we think that time is appropriate, we will take that call,”.
Dhumal also revealed that there is no plan to introduce the new IPL teams. “Ten is a good number for now. Paramount is interested in the tournament and the quality of cricket we play. I do not see any scope in the short term. Moving forward, how this whole landscape develops, we will call accordingly.”
Dhumal will be fantastic for IPL for being the first champion this year. Delhi Capital (DC), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBK) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have not yet won the IPL trophy and are in a strong controversy to enter the playoffs.
“Every year, this is growing. We are very happy how fans have liked this tournament, and broadcast numbers and in-stadia numbers are all unprecedented. We are expecting it to be taken with a special version, 18th version. We will fully move forward that we have seen in the last 17 years, the way we have seen.”
