Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of Team India in Test cricket, marking him as a prominent person in ERA infection in Indian cricket. Gill is ready to be the fifth youngest player to lead India in Tests at the age of 25 years and 285 days, should he lead in the first Test against England from June 20. Now, it has emerged that legendary Indian cricketer and former India head coach Rahul Dravid was consulted by the selectors.

Dravid has been Gill’s coaches at both junior and senior levels. Dravid was the coach of the India U19 team who won the 2018 Under -19 World Cup, which was part of the Gill.

Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of India between 2021 and 2024, Gill witnessed prominently as one of the leading batsmen of the country in forms.

Therefore, given his role in Gill’s rise, Dravid was allegedly advised by the selectors to hand over the choice of handing over the testing captaincy.

According to a BCCI report, a BCCI source said, “The selectors spoke to Dravid as he saw Gill when she was a teenager and also coached her in the U19 and senior team. He had some great things to say about Gill’s ability as a leader.”

The 25 -year -old has been placed as the long -term captain of India by Ajit Aggarkar, president of the BCCI selectors. Agrakar said that the decision to select Gill as a captain is not just for one or two tourism, which means that it is a call taken for the future.

Gill is gradually embedded in leadership roles within the India Camp. He was appointed as vice-captains in White-Ball formats in 2024, and was also a deputy of Rohit Sharma during India’s Champions Trophy 2025 title-winning campaign.

Meanwhile, Gill has also shown a promise as a captain in IPL 2025 through his leadership of Gujarat Titans (GT). With a sport at the league stage of the ongoing tournament, Gill has taken GT to the top of the table.

Gill has also performed with the bat during this period. He is strongly in the race to become the top run-scorer of IPL 2025, scored 636 runs, with six half-centuries, in only 13 matches. Therefore, despite a medium test average of 35, it is a promise that Gill is not a person whose personal performance is less than the captaincy.
