Asia Cup is in danger as India and Sri Lanka in 2025

The Men Asia Cup is scheduled for 2025 September. After that, there will be no window to conduct the event due to bilateral commitments.

New uncertainties have surrounded the Asia Cup 2025 now as both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have decided not to attend the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting scheduled for July 24 in Dhaka. The development, reported by Telecom Asia Sport, comes at a time when the six-nation tournament is barely two months away and member boards are scrambling to finalise logistics.

Asia Cup 2025 in massive doubt now

While the ACC confirmed that the meeting will go ahead as planned, the absence of two co-host nations—India and Sri Lanka—puts the fate of the tournament in jeopardy. The Asia Cup is tentatively scheduled to begin on September 5 in a T20 format. India’s decision not to attend comes in the backdrop of political tension with Bangladesh, which recently prompted the BCCI to push its tour of the country from August this year to September 2026.

According to reports, sponsors and broadcasters are in a bind as a result of the BCCI’s silence regarding the Asia Cup’s hosting. An existing agreement that forbids Pakistan from visiting India until 2027 as a result of India’s refusal to visit Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The report claims that the PCB agreed to a hybrid model in which India’s matches would be moved to Dubai in exchange for Pakistan not sending a team to India for any international competition.

All depends on BCCI?

To find out if India still plans to host the tournament, the ACC has already formally questioned the BCCI. Yesterday, reports came out that the BCCI is awaiting the approval of the Government of India and will reply in a couple of days. There has been no response yet. Despite the withdrawals, the ACC is determined to press on. An official told Telecom Asia Sport,

We’ve provided a 15-day window for all member countries to finalize their arrangements. If any member chooses not to attend in person, online participation is available. The meeting will take place in Dhaka.”

The meeting coincides with a T20I tri-series between Bangladesh and Pakistan, the two nations currently aligned in favour of Dhaka hosting the summit. However, India and Sri Lanka have shown disinterest. Coincidentally, BCCI and SLC are planning to conduct a white-ball series in the August window.
