Rohit Sharma has retired from Test cricket. Star Batter on Wednesday announced the decision of the Indian cricket team ahead of the tour of England, which begins on 20 June. Rohit, who was India’s nominated tests and ODI captain till Wednesday, was expected to lead the side in his upcoming tour including five matches for the longest. This World Test Championship will also start India’s campaign in the 2025-27 cycle. Next to the tour of England, sources told NDTV that Rohit would be removed as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team. In particular, led by Rohit, India won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Sources told NDTV, “Shubman Gill is considered for the captain. There will be some more changes as it kickstarts the WTC cycle. The selectors will not go back. They are likely to look forward,” sources told NDTV.

Earlier, a report by the Indian Express claimed the decision of the selectors to dismiss Rohit (before he had a transition to his retirement) in an infection or calls to remove the players of aging from the team. It said that it was decided on the basis of Rohit’s poor performance with the bat in red-ball cricket. This report states that Rohit will continue to lead the team in the ODI format.

Former India chief selector MSK Prasad feels that Arshdeep Singh, Sai Sudarshan and Kuldeep Yadav should be present in the squad for a five -match Test series in England. In an interview recently, former India head coach Ravi Shastri also threw his weight behind Sudarshan, which is in the middle of a stellar IPL and has experience playing county cricket.

Talking to PTI, Prasad, who was in charge of the selection committee from 2016 to 2020, also explained his reason why Arshdeep and Kuldeep have to be in the squad. He will be deeply transmitted to the deep on the sky between five pacers in the case of the 15-man squad to be declared in mid-May. Shubman Gill is expected to bat three and Virat Kohli, who will need to cross the off-stump demons in the UK once again, batting at four. The pant squad has a favorite choice of wicket-keeper Batter Prasad, while KL Rahul has enough to start as an expert batsman in the middle-order, he said.
