After Phil Sims, the name of the stadium changes to Morhead State

The Morhead State Alumni are changing the name of their stadium for Phil Sims, who quarterbacked New York veterans for a win in Super Bowl XXI.

Official dedication will take place on 18 October at the stadium in Morhead, Q during the homecoming weekend.

Sims played for the program from 1974-78. During his career, Kentaki natives were passed for 5,545 yards and 32 touchdowns and in 1977 named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year.

Athletic director Kelly Wells said, “Phil Sims has been loyal to MSU throughout the years.” “He has given MSU his time, talent and treasure to MSU since his days as a college athlete. He has visited Morhead during summer to host summer camps for young athletes and encourage them to consider MSU.

“He has mentioned MSU coaches and players over the years. Most notable, he has hosted several money -ravaging programs and personally contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the football program. This recognition is the most qualified and long -over -time.”

The veterans drafted him with the seventh overall pick in 1979 and remained with the team through his final NFL season in 1993. Two -time Pro Bowl selection passing yards (33,462) and Touchdown Pass (199) finished second in franchise history.

He was named MVP for New York’s 39–20 victory against Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI, completed 22 out of 25 passes for 268 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Sims earned a second ring with veterans at the Super Bowl XXV, when his injury replacement, Jeff Hosttler won the team 20–19 against Buffalo Bills.

She turned 70 in November, returning to the campus in 2015 to obtain her bachelor’s degree. The university also presented him with an honorary doctorate.

After his game’s career, Sims spent three decades at the broadcast booth.
