Yashasvi Jaiswal smashes fifty in 1st Test in England

Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed a stunning half-century in his very first Test in England on Friday. Opening the batting with KL Rahul, the left-hander was measured in his strokeplay against the moving ball. He got off the mark with an outside edge but that seemed to be the only blemish in a good innings.

The 23-year-old was the accelerator early in the innings, putting Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue away on loose deliveries. However, he was immaculate in his judgement of line and length, playing the waiting game when needed. He put on 91 with Rahul for the first wicket, before the latter and Sai Sudharsan were dismissed.

Post Lunch, Jaiswal partnered with captain Shubman Gill. He survived an LBW decision after Brydon Carse had overstepped. With Gill looking in good touch, the left-hander was happy to bide his time. He eventually reached his half-century off 96 balls, having struck 8 boundaries.

It continues his fine record against England, having scored a fifty in each test he’s played against them. He scored 712 runs in the home series back in 2023, with two double centuries.
