For any baseball player who carries forward the plate to take his swings, the last thing he wants is probably to hit a pitch. This is especially true in Major League baseball. Given that there are several pitches that can throw more than 100 miles per hour, that speeds are hit with baseball, will surely sting. If you need evidence, just look at Boston Red Sax player Tony Konigliaro.
Konigliyaro made his pro debut in 1964 and played his last game in 1975. His entire life changed with the same pitch from California Angels Jack Hamilton’s hand. The date took place on August 18, 1967, and Hamilton’s pitch hit the Konigliaro on its left cheek, causing a linear fracture and a disorganized jaw, along with a severe damage to their left retina.

In 1969, Conigliaro was unimaginable. He returned to Sox and even played with a left eye, he played in 141 games, scored 20 home runs and knocked in 81 runs. Oddly, Konigliaro was traded in Angels in 1970 with team companions Ray Jarvis and Jerry Moses and California sent Kane Tatam, Jarvis Tatam and Dag Griffin to Boston. The same year, Kane Tatam pulled a jack hamilton and one of his pitch hit Paul Blair of Baltimore on the face, as the Konigliearo was hit and Blair suffered several fractures that required surgery.
For Tony Konigliyaro, by 1971, his vision became very poor, and his depth perception decreased, and he was experiencing blind spots. He was placed in the disabled list and retired at the end of the season. In 1975, he came back to Boston as his nominated hitter, but his season became short due to poor vision.
After retirement, Konigliaro had a restaurant, some time as a sports anchor, and a health food reserves. At the age of 37 in 1982, he suffered a heart attack and immediately after a stroke. Due to this, he had to fall into a coma and in 1990 he had a case of pneumonia and kidney failure and died.
Tony is sad as the story of Konigliyaro, it was not as frightening as it happened to another baseball player named Ray Chapman. Chapman was a shortstop for Cleveland Indians in 1920 and was in the team since 1912.
