Ayush Mhatre, the India U-19 skipper didn’t look the part during the entire ODI series vs England, that they won 3-2, but soon showed his class, when the Test series arrived. The 17-year-old CSK opener started the match with a bang, as he went on to record a ton against the opposition, on Saturday in Beckenham, during the first Test of the series.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Ayush Mhatre was in full control, and brought up his hundred around the strike-rate of 90. His innings included 14 fours and two sixes as well. But soon after he reached the milestone, he was dismissed by off-spinner Archie Vaughan.
That dismissal bore some similarity to that of KL Rahul’s dismissal in the ongoing Lord’s Test between India and England. Just after the opener slammed his 10th Test century, a lapse in concentration meant, he edged one from Shoaib Bashir, only to be caught by Harry Brook at first slip.
Coming back to the U-19 encounter, it was a rare failure for Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who piled up heaps of runs in the ODIs. He scored 14 from 13, slamming three fours in his stay at the wicket. But he was removed by Alex Green, early on in the innings. Thereafter, Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra built a huge stand of 173.
