Wiaan Mulder was long seen as a successor to South Africa’s never-ending list of fast-bowling all-rounders, but somehow never really had performances that went through the roof. But not anymore. Coming in as a captain in the 2nd Test vs Zimbabwe, the leadership role seems to have fit him well, as he went on to score his maiden 300, on day 2 of the Bulawayo clash.
Along the way, he broke multiple records as well. For starters, he is only the second South African batter after Hashim Amla (311 vs England in 2012), to score a triple hundred. Next, his milestone came in only 297 deliveries, which happens to be the second fastest in the history of the game, after Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball effort against the Proteas, in Chennai in 2007-08.
The next in this list is Harry Brook, who scored a triple ton in 310 balls, against Pakistan in Multan last year. What is even more staggering is, he eclipsed Virat Kohli, in terms of most aggregate runs on Test captaincy debut. Prior to Wiaan Mulder’s triple ton, Virat Kohli led the charts with an aggregate of 264 vs Australia (115 and 141 at Adelaide).
