New Delhi: Shubman Gill knocked a career-defying on 2 of the second Test of the second Test against England at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, bringing her first Test double century in loud fashion. With this monumental attempt, Gill became only the third Indian to score a Test double hundred in England, and the first Indian captain to achieve an achievement on English soil.Gill took 311 balls to reach the landmark. Upon reaching the milestone, he celebrated with passion – while punching the air, removed his helmet, dropped a knee for a fist pump, then his trademark bow. After the Indian dressing room stood up, a wide smile burnt his face and appreciated the young skipper milestone. The knock not only identified Gill’s first test double hundred, but also kept them in Elite Company. Among the Indian captains, only Virat Kohli (7 double tons) scored more. Others have reached the 200 -run mark, as the captain includes Mac Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and now Shubman Gill.Significantly, after Kohli’s 200 against West Indies in the North Sound in 2016, Gill is just a second double hundred by one Indian captain by one Indian captain. Gill also entered his dual century as captain in his third innings in his third innings, Sunil Gavaskar (205 vs Wi, Wankhed, 1978) as well as his third innings in his dual century. He also made history by becoming the first Asian captain to record dual century in army countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). The last best Tilakaratne was in Dilshan’s 193 at Lord’s in 2011.Gill also engraved his name in a rare list of captains with hundreds of people doubled in England. Their effort is the 11th example in which only one – Graeme Smith’s Edgbaston is double tons and Lord’s in 2003 – at a young age.In 25 years and 298 days, Gill is now the second youngest Indian captain to score a Test double hundred behind Mac Pataudi, who achieved feat in 23 years and 39 days in 1964.
