Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar Slam to relax Jasprit Bumrah for Gautam Gambhir

Jasprit Bumrah was rested for the 2nd test in Birmingham due to workload management. But former India players were not happy.

India’s Test Captain Shubman Gill ended all speculation around Jasprit Bumrah when he announced, “No Bumrah.” After 0–1 in the five-match Test series and after an eight-day break, the India team management decided to rest the Premier Fast Bowler, despite announcing Bumrah’s availability. The decision was not good between fans and two former India captains, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri. Both of them called the decision difficult to believe.

“This is a very important match, they have a week’s holiday. I am a little surprised that Bumrah is not playing this game. It should be taken out of the player’s hand. It should be captain and coaching staff who decide who should play 11 who should play 11. Ravi Shastri said, India slammed Bumrah’s decision to rest IND vs Engbaston test.

“Chakrana. If you are bowling first, you need him more than someone else. You are keeping it for God,” Gavaskar said on Sony Sports.

Jasprit Bumrah Workload

It is not that Bumrah is overwork. This is his frequent low-back problem due to his unconventional bowling action that creates an issue. In 2022, Bumrah performed second surgery for fracture of low back tension. He missed out on two months of action after suffering from a recurring back injury in Australia. Therefore, he has been under strict charge management guidelines.

Statistically, Mohammad Siraj has bowled the most overs by an Indian pacer since 2023. But Bumrah is in second place. Since 2023, Bumrah bowled 603.5 overs in forms, 82 wickets, on average 15.87. Add IPL to the mixture and its charge increased significantly.

But India indicated a warning in Australia, forcing Team India to implement strict charge management. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah bowled 151.2 overs and was dropped from the second innings of the Sydney Test as he again injured his back. The injury excluded Bumrah for two months, forcing him to remember the ICC Champions Trophy. He returned to the IPL before the tour of England but with a strict warning. Bumrah could play only three Tests and no more.

“If you look at the run, it’s in India, it has become a very important test match. You have lost three against New Zealand, you have lost three against Australia. You have lost the first Test match here and you want to return the ways of winning. You have the best fast bowler in the world, and you sit after seven days, it is very difficult to believe it.“Ravi Shastri said, the claims of the workload management were rejected.
