Champions League T20 should be reborn as World Club Championship in 2026

The Champions League T20 was terminated in 2015 after a poor response from fans and sponsored conflicts.

Earlier, ECB’s CEO Richard Gold confirmed ESPNcricinfo about the possible revival of CLT20 last month. Now, it is close to becoming a reality. Currently, ECB is interacting with BCCI and Cricket Australia. In its first edition, the World Club Championship is likely to follow the CLT20 format. The only joint will be a team of new leagues like SA20, ILT20 and hundred. In the final edition of CLT20 in 2014, it was a 10-team case with three IPL teams and was now a challenge from each two teams from BBL and now-Difunction Ram Slam T20 from South Africa.
“It’s on the card. Without any doubt, at some point, there will be a World Club Championship for both men and women. This is the next logical step,” Richard Gold told ESPNcricinfo,
Clt20 dies
While the Champions League T20 was launched in 2009, riding on the popularity of the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League failed to land the tournament. The number of poor TV audiences struggled for sponsorship. Finally, in 2015, it was abolished. Only India and South Africa hosted six versions of the tournament before canceling.

World Club Championship 2026
While reports claim that the World Cup Championship 2026, if launched, will follow the same format as CLT20. In that case, IPL will get minimum three entries. The remaining teams will come from other top T20 leagues including PSL, BBL, SA 20, CPL and hundred. If launched in 2026, defending IPL Champion Royal Challengers Bangalore will be one of the teams.
However, the tournament can struggle to find a window. Other T20 leagues such as PSL will struggle to find a window to follow a February-March and T20 World Cup set for IPL 2026 to follow in March-May Window. Therefore, this will be a challenge for ECB to accommodate the World Club Championship.
