Gold Cup: Honduras knocked Penma on a penalty kick

Honduras defeated Penma 5–4 on a penalty kick and saw the Central American teams 1–1, which was 1–1 to 1–1 via regulation in the ConcaCAF Gold Cup quarterfinals in Glandale, Aries on Saturday night.

The play ended in the left corner below the right-leg shot of Carlos Pineeda as Honduras knocked on the Panama, which failed to the previous kick when Eduardo Gurero’s attempt was too much.

Panama’s successful punishment came from Fidel Escobar, Ismail Diaz, Carlos Harvey and Eric Davis. Anibal Godby hit the right post with left -foot shot in the third round, and Gurero also missed.

Honduras started well with Luis Palma, Kevin Ariaga, Joseph Rosles (after the VAR review) and Denyl Maldonado. Choco Lozano’s shot was rescued by Panama goalkeeper Orlando Moskera.

Panama scored Diaz’s penalty shot in a minute in the first half stop time. Edwin Rodriguez of Honduras falled Christian Martinez in the penalty area. Diaz sent a right-foot shot to the lower left corner of the net.

Diaz scored six goals of Panama’s 11 goals in the tournament.

Honduras would lose the match on Lozano’s goal in the 82nd minute. Panama surpassed a header from Maldonado at the cross moments of Rosles, followed by Pineda’s left leg shot which missed the right after a corner kick.

Pineeda then assisted Lozano on another corner, in which the tinging goal was coming from the nearest border and kept in the right corner below.

Honduras leads the series 4–1-1 in Gold Cup meetings with Panama.

Panama led assets of 68.4 percent to 31.6 percent, more shot attempt (14–10), shots (6-3) and corner kick (13–5).

Aldric Menjivar made five savings for Honduras, while the Panama mosquito created one.

Panama, in search of its first Gold Cup crown, went 3–0 (9 points) in Group C, defeating Jamaica (4–1), Guatemala (1-0) and Guadeloop (5-2).

Honduras in the knockout round for the first time since 2021, Group B had a 2–1-0 (6 digits) to finish a digit behind Canada for the second place. Honduras responded to a 6–0 defeat to Canada with a win over Al Salvador (2–0) and Kuracao (2–1).
