Joffra Archer returns to red-ball cricket after 1501 days, return test in IND vs ENG on card

With a return to the County Championship, Joffra Archer will look for a test return at the Ind vs ENG 2nd test in Birmingham.
After 1,501 days, England fast bowler Jofra Archer is back in red-ball cricket. Playing for Sussex, Archer made a comeback in the County Championship following prolonged elbow issues. While he is not in the England squad for India Test, Archer is aiming to make a comeback. If everything goes well and he remains fit throughout the first County stint, he could earn a recall in the IND vs ENG Test series with the Ashes 2025 realistic expectation.
The last time Archer played a red-ball match was back in 2021 against Kent in the County Championship after suffering an elbow injury during India vs England Test series earlier that year. However, his return to red-ball cricket was short-lived. Archer continued to struggle with his elbow. But with no relief, Archer underwent surgery on his right elbow after the Sussex vs Kent match.
Test comeback in IND vs ENG series?
After trouble with his elbow and then back, Archer has been injury-free since IPL 2025 ended. Even though Archer missed the last leg of the IPL due to a thumb injury, his troubled elbow and back seem to be fine. With the Ashes coming up and England’s long list of injured pace bowlers, Archer would be raring to make a comeback.
On his return to County cricket, he bowled a short spell of four overs to start with. To everyone’s delight, he bowled well to trouble both Durham batters Alex Lees and Emilio Gay. Now, as he continues to build red-ball workload, all eyes will be on him. While the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is optimistic about his return as soon as the IND vs ENG 2nd Test in Birmingham, Test captain Ben Stokes is cautious.
“He’s been absolutely desperate to put the white shirt back on. He’s had a torrid run with injuries, but he’s managed a fair bit of white-ball cricket recently. The fact that we can now put a structure in place for his red-ball return is a great sign,” Ben Stokes said ahead of the IND vs ENG 1st Test in Headingley.
