WTA Roundup: McCartney Casler dropped the number 1 seed in Nottingham

In the first round of the Lexus Nottingham Open in Nottingham, England, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 7-5, Brazil’s Noid Beatries Hadadad Maiya’s unwanted Macartney Kesler upset number 1 Seed Beatries Hadad Mia.

In a match of nearly three hours, Casler–led 6–5 in the third set at number 42 in the world, then broke Hadad Mia’s service to win at the point of his first match. Caller won 72 percent of his first serve and changed five of his 10 break points.

Number 8 Seed Katie Baulter won 6-2, 6-2 on the Lulu Sun of New Zealand on the soil of the house. The bowlter was one of the four Britis to win on Tuesday. Franceska Jones defeated the countryman Harriet Dart 7-5, 6-4; Son Kartal took Leolia Jeanjian of France below 6-3, 6-4; And Mingge Joo, a 17-year-old Wales, surprised Katie Voltates 6-3, 6-3.

Poland’s number 6 Seed Magda Lnet, Slovakia’s Rebecca Srimkova and Spain’s Christina Buxa also advanced.

Neither the player served till the tiebreaker in the second set, when Vondrasova ran away for a 4–0 lead. The Australian Open Champion provoked five straight points to move forward, but Vondrasova pulled back and won at the point of their second match.

2023 Wimbledon Champion Wondrasova has declined in the world rankings at number 164 in the world rankings amid an injury in the 2024 season. Her next rival Diana Schneider of Russia, Donna Wikic of Croatia will be 6–2, 6-4 winners.

In Berlin, 2021 champions Russia’s Lidmila Samsanova lagged Naomi Osaka of Japan 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4. Other winners included Amanda Anisimova on Tuesday, Zenu Wang of China and Elena Rybikina of Kazakhstan.
