Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2025 auction pick dissected its toe

For those unknown people, dissection means cutting one organ with surgery.

England fast bowler Brydon Carse has revealed that he once seriously thought about amputating his toe to deal with a painful and recurring injury. The 29-year-old pacer, who was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for ₹1 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, missed the entire tournament due to this issue as well.

Some serious setback for Brydon Carse

Carse suffered deep, infected cuts on the second toe of his left foot, caused by the repeated impact of his front-foot landing while bowling. The problem started during England’s white-ball tour of India and got so severe that he had to skip the ICC Champions Trophy and was out of action for nearly three months.

Speaking to the BBC, Carse said: “At one stage I was going to bed thinking, ‘I think I could actually do this—I think I could get rid of my second toe,’ but then the medical staff said you need it for balance, so that was quickly ruled out.”

In his fight to stay on the field, Carse tried several unusual tricks like wearing narrower shoes, using special insoles, and even cutting a hole in his boots to reduce pressure on the toe. “For a period of about six to eight weeks, I was on three or four different courses of antibiotics. Eventually, the wound was so deep that it ultimately needed a period of time just to heal up and close up,” he added.

Injury forced Carse to miss IPL 2025

While there were discussions about possible plastic surgery, complete rest turned out to be the best solution. Carse made his comeback in late May, playing in England’s 3-0 ODI series win over the West Indies. He took four wickets at an economy of 6.74.

Due to the injury, Carse missed the IPL 2025 season. SRH replaced him with South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for ₹75 lakh. Had he been fit to play, who knows Carse would’ve helped SRH revive their dwindling campaign. Now fit again, Carse has been named in England’s squad for the first Test against India starting June 20.
