Former-Sri Lanka cricketer Ramith Rambukwela was arrested in corruption case

Former Ramith Rambukwela, former Sri Lankan international cricketer, was arrested on Wednesday by an Anti-Graft Commission in connection with a corruption case associated with his politician’s father. The Commission called Rambukwela to appear in front of it on Wednesday morning to investigate allegations of bribery or corruption (Ciaboc). He was arrested after recording a statement with the bribe Commission. He was later sent by the court of the Colombo Chief Magistrate till 3 June. Colombo chief Magistrate Thanuja Lacmali on Tuesday allowed Rambukwela to be named as a suspect in the corruption case associated with a former powerful minister in Rajkas, a former powerful minister, his father Kehlia Ramibbalala.

Cahalia, who was earlier arrested by the Bribe Commission, is in remand custody till 3 June.

He is facing allegations of corruption and was arrested in 2024 under his government in 2024 to misuse the Indian Credit Line to buy poor medicine in 2024.

Ramith played two T20 Internationals in 2013 and 2018 after a successful school cricket career against New Zealand and England.

In a separate case, Sri Lanka Pudujana Pararamuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa, who is also the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has been accused on alleged misuse of LKR 70 million from Indo-based Krishi Hotels for the development of rugby in Sri Linka.

He will have to face pre-testing hearing on 27 June. Namal was a national rugi player.

A host of former MPs is spending time in remand custody for various cases of corruption.

The current National People’s Power (NPP) government promised to clean public life by holding politicians accountable in the general elections last year.
