Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik resigned as PCB mentor

Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik has quit as a mentor for Pakistan’s domestic competitions. The star was among five ex-Pakistan cricketers who were named as mentors. Malik has cited personal commitments for stepping away from the role.

The other mentors appointed by the PCB apart from Malik include Saqlain Mushtaq, Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Waqar Younis. As per ESPNCricinfo, Shoaib’s decision came on the same day when reports claimed that the PCB was willing to let go of all five mentors. Additionally, the report states that the PCB is also planning to scale down domestic cricket in Pakistan.

“This was not an easy choice, but after reflecting on my commitments, I realised that juggling multiple responsibilities would prevent me from giving my best – both to Pakistan cricket and to my other professional and personal priorities,” Malik said.

It is pertinent to point out that all five mentors were appointed on three-year contracts that go on till 2027. The publication reportedly spoke to three of the remaining four mentors who claimed that they had not been informed of any such decision by the PCB.

“To ensure fairness to all, I believe this is the right time to transition. Working with some of Pakistan’s most talented cricketers has been an immensely rewarding experience, one I will always cherish,” Malik added.

As per ESPNCricinfo, each of the five mentors are paid PKR 5 million per month approximately. This is more than how much the country’s elite stars like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Rizwan are paid.
